Chapter 6 - The Secret Life

The office was entirely silent, save for the soft, rhythmic ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.
Adrian flipped past the first few pages of standard employee information, his eyes scanning the black and white text with practiced speed.
Grace Miller was twenty-eight years old, possessed a clean criminal record, and had absolutely no prior history of disciplinary action.
She had been employed at Whitmore House for exactly eleven months, receiving universally average performance reviews from Mrs. Gable.
However, as Adrian dug deeper into the financial and personal sections of the highly classified report, the true picture began to emerge.
Grace was not just working full-time at the massive Connecticut estate.
She was also working night shifts as a waitress at a run-down, twenty-four-hour diner on the terrifying outskirts of the city.
According to her tax records, she was logging over eighty hours of grueling physical labor every single week just to survive.
Adrian frowned deeply, tracing a perfectly manicured finger over a photograph of her current residential address.
She lived in a tiny, dilapidated studio apartment located in one of the most dangerous, crime-ridden neighborhoods in the entire state.
The building had multiple housing code violations, no central heating, and a history of violent break-ins.
"Why is she living in squalor when she earns a premium salary at my estate?" Adrian asked aloud, genuinely perplexed by the math.
Malcolm, who had already skimmed the deeply tragic contents of the file, shifted uncomfortably in his chair.
"Keep reading to page six, Mr. Whitmore," Malcolm suggested quietly, a rare tone of genuine sympathy in his voice.
Adrian turned the thick paper over, his eyes instantly locking onto a massive stack of terrifying medical bills.
There were hundreds of invoices, heavily stamped with red warning labels indicating past-due balances and threats of collection.
They were all issued from the highly prestigious Saint Jude’s Pediatric Specialty Hospital.
At the very bottom of the file was a birth certificate and a devastating medical diagnosis report.
Grace was the sole legal guardian of her six-year-old little brother, Leo Miller.
Their parents had tragically passed away in a car accident four years prior, leaving Grace entirely responsible for the young boy.
Leo had been diagnosed with a severe, incredibly rare congenital heart defect that required constant monitoring and extremely expensive treatments.
Every single penny Grace earned from scrubbing floors, serving rich people, and wiping down tables went directly into keeping her baby brother alive.
She was legally drowning in an ocean of medical debt, skipping meals just to afford his expensive daily medications.
Adrian stopped breathing for a terrifying second, feeling as though a physical weight had just been dropped directly onto his chest.
He stared blankly at the wall, completely paralyzed by a sudden, violent wave of realization.
When Grace had offered him those few, simple slices of apple at the front gate, she was not just giving away extra food.
She was likely giving him the only breakfast she had planned to eat that entire day.
She was literally starving herself so that a complete stranger would not have to feel the painful ache of an empty stomach.
While Adrian sat in a penthouse office counting his billions, a young maid in his own house was quietly suffering through an unimaginable nightmare.
And instead of being rewarded for her beautiful, selfless heart, she had been ruthlessly punished, humiliated, and fined by his own cruel staff.
Adrian violently slammed the folder shut, the loud, aggressive smack echoing through the massive room like a gunshot.
His hands were physically shaking, not from the cold of the morning, but from an overwhelming, white-hot rage.
"Malcolm," Adrian said, his voice dangerously low and thick with unshed emotion.
"Yes, Mr. Whitmore?"
"Clear my schedule for tomorrow, prepare the company helicopter, and draft a termination letter for Mrs. Gable that will completely blacklist her from this industry forever."

"I am going back to Connecticut in the morning."
"And I am going to completely burn that pathetic little hierarchy to the ground."
