Chapter 18 - The Mastermind

"I did not take it!" Grace screamed, her voice cracking with raw, unadulterated agony as tears streamed rapidly down her pale cheeks.
She looked up at Adrian with desperate, begging eyes, hoping to find a shred of the kindness he had shown her just yesterday.
"Please, you have to believe me, someone planted that in my bag!" she sobbed, clutching her chest as a panic attack threatened to completely overwhelm her.
Thomas stepped forward, shaking his head with a perfectly practiced look of deep, sorrowful disappointment.
"It is truly a shame, Mr. Whitmore, to see such terrible greed ruin a young woman's entire future," Thomas said softly.
"I warned Mrs. Gable that promoting a lower-class maid would eventually end in total disaster, but even I did not expect this level of blatant theft."
Thomas reached down to retrieve the incredibly expensive watch, fully expecting Adrian to order the young woman arrested on the spot.
But as Thomas’s fingers brushed the platinum metal, Adrian’s heavy leather shoe suddenly stepped squarely onto his hand, pinning it aggressively to the concrete.
Thomas let out a loud, undignified yelp of pain, looking up at his employer in absolute shock.
"Do you know how a man in my position survives in a world full of liars, Thomas?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into a lethal, terrifying whisper.
He slowly removed his foot, allowing the terrified butler to snatch his bruised hand back.
Adrian reached into his tailored pocket and pulled out a sleek, black remote control.
He pointed the remote directly at the large, flat-screen television mounted on the basement wall, normally used for staff training videos.
He pressed a single button, and the screen instantly flickered to life in brilliant, high-definition 4K resolution.
The screen displayed a crystal-clear, hidden-camera feed pointing directly at the antique desk inside Adrian's private study.
The entire staff watched in absolute, paralyzed silence as the video played out the events of the last twenty minutes.
They clearly saw Adrian take off the watch, place it on the leather pad, and walk into the bathroom.
Ten seconds later, the unmistakable figure of Thomas sneaked into the room, snatched the watch, and practically sprinted back out the door.
Thomas let out a horrifying gasp, all the color instantly draining from his aging face as his knees violently buckled beneath him.
Adrian pressed another button, and the screen split to show a second hidden camera positioned directly above the basement lockers.
The video clearly showed Thomas unlocking Grace's door, unzipping her canvas bag, and burying the watch beneath her sweater.
"I built a global financial empire on total paranoia, Thomas," Adrian whispered, leaning down so his face was mere inches from the trembling butler.
"Did you honestly believe I would leave a million-dollar heirloom sitting on a desk without having four separate cameras watching it?"
Thomas began to hyperventilate, crawling backward on his hands and knees like a terrified animal desperate to escape a trap.
"Mr. Whitmore, please, it was just a lapse in judgment, I was angry about the promotion!" Thomas violently sobbed, completely abandoning his dignified persona.
"I was a loyal servant to this estate for ten long years!"
"You were a parasite waiting for a chance to strike," Adrian snapped coldly, signaling the security team with a sharp nod of his head.
"Arrest this pathetic man for grand larceny, attempted fraud, and criminal conspiracy, and call the local police immediately."
The heavily armed guards violently hauled Thomas to his feet, snapping heavy steel handcuffs tightly around his wrists as he screamed for mercy.
Adrian did not spare the disgraced butler another glance as he was forcefully dragged out of the basement.
Instead, the ruthless billionaire dropped perfectly to his knees on the dirty concrete floor, directly in front of the violently sobbing young maid.
