Chapter 14 - The Promotion

Adrian slowly turned away from the massive oak doors and looked back up the grand, sweeping staircase.
Grace was still standing near the top, her hands nervously gripping the heavy wooden banister just to keep herself upright.
She looked incredibly fragile in her faded, pale gray maid's uniform, especially with the dark purple bruise glaring on her arm.
Yet, in Adrian's eyes, this young, exhausted woman was the absolute strongest person in the entire room.
"Grace, please come down here," Adrian requested softly, entirely dropping his terrifying, aggressive billionaire persona.
Grace swallowed hard, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs as she slowly walked down the marble steps.
The other employees instantly parted like the Red Sea, creating a wide, clear path for her to approach the center of the foyer.
When she finally reached the bottom, she kept her eyes firmly glued to the tips of Adrian's expensive leather shoes.
"Look at me, Grace," Adrian said gently.
She slowly raised her head, her tired brown eyes meeting the intense, powerful gaze of the man who controlled her entire destiny.
"You had absolutely no idea who I was this morning," Adrian stated, making sure his voice carried to every corner of the silent room.
"You knew you were risking your employment, you knew you were breaking protocol, and you took a severe financial penalty anyway."
Adrian reached into the inside pocket of his suit jacket and pulled out a pristine, white corporate envelope.
"You did all of that just to make sure a stranger did not have to suffer the agonizing pain of an empty stomach."
He held the envelope out, his eyes scanning the faces of the terrified staff before returning his absolute focus to Grace.
"I had my senior advisor run a complete, comprehensive background check on you this morning."
Grace gasped softly, a sudden spike of terrible panic hitting her chest as she thought about her fragile younger brother.
"I know exactly how many double shifts you work at that disgusting diner, and I know exactly where every single penny of your paycheck goes," Adrian continued.
A collective murmur rippled through the staff, absolutely shocked that the billionaire knew such intimate details about a lowly maid.
"You have been working eighty hours a week to keep your six-year-old brother alive on life support, all while being ruthlessly bullied by my staff."
Tears immediately sprang to Grace’s eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks as the crushing weight of her secret burden was finally dragged into the light.
"From this exact moment forward, you will never scrub another floor or wash another towel in this house again," Adrian declared firmly.
He pressed the crisp white envelope directly into her trembling hands.
"Inside this envelope is a brand-new contract, officially naming you the new Estate Manager of Whitmore House."
The staff gasped in absolute, overwhelming shock, completely unable to believe that a junior maid was just handed the keys to the entire kingdom.
"Your base salary has been tripled, you will receive full premium medical benefits, and you have complete, unchecked authority over this staff."
Grace let out a loud, uncontrollable sob, clutching the precious envelope to her chest as if it were a literal lifeline.
"Thank you, Mr. Whitmore," she cried openly, completely overwhelmed by the miraculous, life-changing blessing.
Adrian offered her a small, incredibly rare, and entirely genuine smile.
"No, Grace," Adrian whispered softly.
"Thank you for proving to me that human decency still actually exists in this dark, miserable world."
He turned back to the rest of the shocked employees, his face instantly hardening back into a mask of pure, untouchable authority.
