Chapter 16 - The Setup

Friday evening arrived with a dramatic downpour of heavy rain that battered the high glass windows of Whitmore House.

Adrian Whitmore arrived at seven sharp, looking completely commanding in a bespoke charcoal-gray suit.

He spent three hours in the grand dining hall, effortlessly closing a four-hundred-million-dollar acquisition deal with European shipping magnates.

Throughout the entire evening, Grace managed the dinner service with flawless, natural grace and quiet efficiency.

She ensured the courses were delivered on time, the wine pairings were accurate, and the guests felt treated like royalty.

Adrian observed her performance from the head of the long dining table, thoroughly satisfied that his instincts had been entirely correct.

When the wealthy investors finally departed in their limousines, Adrian retired to his private second-floor study to review the closing documents.

He sat at his antique writing desk, running a tired hand through his dark hair.

Feeling the heavy fatigue of a twelve-hour workday, Adrian unclasped his watch and placed it carefully on top of the leather desk pad.

It was not just any watch; it was a vintage, ultra-rare 1968 Rolex Daytona in solid platinum, valued at over one point two million dollars.

It had been given to him by his late grandfather and was one of the few physical objects on earth that held genuine sentimental value to him.

Adrian stood up and walked into the adjacent private bathroom to wash his face, leaving the study doors partially ajar.

This was the exact, golden opportunity Thomas had been waiting for all night.

Lurking in the shadows of the dimly lit second-floor corridor, the senior butler watched Adrian disappear into the bathroom.

Thomas moved with practiced, silent steps, slipping past the heavy wooden door frame and directly into the private study.

His heart hammered against his ribs, but his hands remained completely steady as he reached for the glittering platinum timepiece.

He snatched the vintage Rolex from the leather desk pad and shoved it deep into the velvet-lined pocket of his formal tailcoat.

He slipped out of the study without making a single sound, checking both directions of the hallway before speeding toward the staff quarters.

He took the narrow service stairs down to the basement locker room, which was entirely deserted at this late hour.

He walked directly to the locker marked with Grace’s name, using a master skeleton key he had secretly duplicated months ago.

He clicked the metal door open, revealing Grace’s modest personal belongings.

Sitting on the bottom shelf was her cheap, worn canvas tote bag that she used to carry her diner clothes and medication schedules.

Thomas unzipped the canvas bag and pushed the million-dollar watch deep beneath an old wool cardigan.

He zipped the bag back up, carefully locked the metal locker door, and wiped away any potential fingerprints with a clean silk handkerchief.

His face broke into a broad, triumphant grin as he walked back toward the grand staircase.

He walked directly to the private study where Adrian had just emerged, knocking firmly on the heavy mahogany door.

"Enter," Adrian’s deep voice called out from within.

Thomas pushed the door open, forcing a look of absolute panic and breathless distress onto his aging face.

"Mr. Whitmore, forgive the sudden intrusion, sir, but I must report an urgent security matter!" Thomas exclaimed, bowing low.

Adrian looked up from his papers, his eyes narrowing sharply at the butler's frantic behavior.

"What is the matter, Thomas?" Adrian asked calmly.

"I was doing my final rounds in the west hallway just now, sir, and I noticed the new manager, Grace, lingering suspiciously near your private desk," Thomas lied smoothly.

"When she saw me approach, she bolted down the service stairs looking completely terrified."

"I came in to make sure nothing was disturbed, but I immediately noticed that your grandfather’s platinum Rolex is missing from your desk."
