Chapter 8 - JUSTICE SERVED

Three months passed.
The trial of Marcus Sterling was the biggest media spectacle of the decade.
Julian sat in the front row of the courtroom every single day.
He watched coldly as his stepbrother was paraded in shackles.
The evidence against Marcus was insurmountable.
There was the poisoned coffee mug, tested and verified by federal labs.
There was Martha’s tearful testimony, explaining how she was blackmailed and bribed to hide Clara in plain sight.
There was the live video feed from the burner phone, showing Marcus attempting to inject Eleanor with a lethal dose of air.
Marcus’s expensive lawyers tried to plead insanity.
They tried to blame the corporate pressure for breaking his mind.
The jury didn't buy a single word of it.
When the verdict was read, the courtroom was dead silent.
“Guilty on all counts,” the foreman announced.
The judge sentenced Marcus to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Marcus turned to look at Julian one last time, his eyes filled with venom and defeat.
Julian didn't give him the satisfaction of a reaction.
He simply stood up, adjusted his suit jacket, and walked out of the courtroom.
Outside, the press swarmed him, flashing cameras and shouting questions.
“Mr. Sterling, how do you feel now that justice has been served?” a reporter yelled.
Julian stopped before getting into his car.
“I feel like a man who has his family back,” Julian said simply.
“And that is all that matters.”

He got into the back seat, leaving the chaos of the media behind him.
He was going home.
