Chapter 7 - The Syndicate's Shield

A week had passed since the incident. The Romano estate had fundamentally transformed.

Clara was no longer relegated to the servants' quarters. Julian had moved her into the suite directly across from the nursery—a massive, sunlit room with a balcony overlooking the gardens. He had doubled the security detail around the perimeter and restricted all access to the property.

Mia was healing beautifully. The terrifying gray pallor had vanished, replaced by the rosy cheeks of a healthy, happy toddler. She practically lived in Clara’s arms, refusing to let anyone else feed or bathe her.

And Julian... Julian had changed.

The ruthless billionaire who used to spend eighteen hours a day in his study was now joining them for breakfast. He sat on the floor of the nursery, building block towers with Mia while Clara read books aloud. The heavy, oppressive atmosphere of the manor had evaporated, replaced by a warm, undeniable domesticity.

One evening, after Mia had finally fallen asleep, Clara walked out onto the balcony to get some fresh air. Julian was already there, leaning against the stone railing, holding two glasses of expensive wine.

He handed her one. "She went down easily tonight," Julian noted, a soft smile playing on his lips.

"She feels safe," Clara replied, taking a sip. The wine was rich and warm, much like the way Julian was looking at her.

"And do you?" Julian asked, turning his body toward her. "Do you feel safe, Clara?"

Clara looked up at the towering man. The moonlight caught the sharp angles of his face, making him look devastatingly handsome. "For the first time in a very long time... yes."

Julian reached out, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. The touch sent a jolt of electricity straight to her core. "You are remarkable, Clara. I spent years building an empire, and it took you a week to make this massive house actually feel like a home."

Clara’s breath hitched. She saw the raw vulnerability in his eyes. Before she could overthink it, she leaned into his touch.
