Chapter 3 - The Banishment

"You can't do this to me!" Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "I come from a highly respected family! The press will destroy you! I'll tell everyone what a monster you are!"
"Let them write whatever they want," Julian replied, his voice a lethal whisper. "But you and I both know what I am capable of, Vanessa. If you ever speak my name again, if you ever come within a hundred miles of my daughter, or if you ever look at Clara Hayes, I will erase you and your entire bloodline. And the world will simply assume you vanished."
Two massive men in dark suits stepped out from the shadows of the hallway. Julian’s enforcers. They didn't speak. They simply crossed their arms and stared at Vanessa.
Terror, absolute and paralyzing, finally set in. Vanessa realized she wasn't negotiating with a frustrated fiancé; she had awakened the apex predator she had foolishly believed she could tame.
She turned and sprinted up the grand staircase. Exactly two minutes and forty-five seconds later, she scrambled back down, clutching a single designer duffel bag, her hair disheveled, her makeup smeared. She didn't look at Julian. She ran out the front door into the freezing night, fleeing like a rat from a sinking ship.
Julian watched her go, feeling no satisfaction, only a burning, protective rage that had fundamentally altered his worldview. He pulled out his phone and dialed his head of security.
"Vanessa Sterling is persona non grata," Julian ordered. "Freeze the joint accounts. Burn her security clearances. I want eyes on her until she boards a plane out of this state."

"Understood, Boss," the voice replied.
Julian hung up. The house was finally quiet, but it felt hollow. He turned and walked back out the door, his mind entirely focused on the two people waiting for him at the clinic. He had an empire to run, but suddenly, nothing mattered more than the girl with the bruised ribs and the toddler with the cast.
