Chapter 14 - The Proposal

A year after the night that changed everything, Julian hosted a massive gala at the estate.
It was ostensibly a charity fundraiser for pediatric hospitals, a cause deeply personal to both Julian and Clara. The grand vestibule—once a place of terror—was now filled with music, laughter, and the most powerful figures in New York.
Clara stood near the grand staircase, looking breathtaking in an emerald green silk gown. She held a glass of champagne, chatting effortlessly with the mayor’s wife. She was the perfect hostess, radiant and self-assured.
Julian watched her from across the room, unable to take his eyes off her. He remembered the bruised, terrified girl who had shielded his daughter with her own body. He remembered the fierce warrior who had fought off a killer. She was the heart of his empire, the savior of his family.
The music slowly faded as Julian stepped up to the microphone on the grand stage. The room quieted, turning their attention to the formidable billionaire.
"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for being here tonight," Julian began, his voice echoing through the opulent hall. "We have raised a record-breaking amount for children in need. But tonight is also a very personal celebration for me."
He stepped down from the stage, walking directly toward Clara. The crowd parted for him, murmurs of anticipation rippling through the elite guests.
Clara’s heart fluttered as Julian stopped in front of her. His icy blue eyes were warm, filled with absolute, undeniable devotion.

"A year ago, I was a man living in the dark," Julian said, loud enough for the room to hear, but his eyes never left hers. "Then, I met a woman who showed me what true courage looks like. She saved my daughter. She saved my soul. And she brought the light back into this house."
Julian Romano, the most ruthless man in New York, slowly dropped to one knee.
