Chapter 1 - The Confession of Shadows

Clara could barely breathe as Julian’s icy blue eyes locked onto hers. The silence in the clinical room was absolute, broken only by the steady, rhythmic beeping of Mia’s heart monitor.
"Tell me," Julian repeated, his voice dropping to a register that vibrated with lethal intent. "Every single thing."
Clara swallowed the lump of terror lodged in her throat. She looked at the tiny, fragile girl sleeping under the sterile white sheets, and the dam finally broke.
"It started a month after you hired her," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "Whenever you flew out of the country, Vanessa changed. She dismissed the kitchen staff early. She locked the nursery. When Mia cried for food, Vanessa would mix sedatives into her bottle. She called it 'peace and quiet.'"
Julian’s fists clenched at his sides. The leather of his gloves creaked under the immense pressure.
"I tried to stop her," Clara sobbed, tears carving hot paths down her cheeks. "The first time I poured the laced milk down the drain, she found out. She cornered me in the pantry. She told me that if I ever crossed her, she would ruin me. She said you would never believe a runaway nanny over your future wife. She said she’d ensure I was thrown out onto the streets... or worse."
Julian stepped closer, his imposing frame casting a long shadow over Clara. "Why didn't you come to me?"
"Because I am a ghost, Mr. Romano," Clara choked out, wrapping her arms around her bruised ribs. "I am hiding from a man who promised to kill me. Vanessa found my fake ID. She knew my real name. If I spoke, she promised to send my location to him. I couldn't risk it. But I couldn't leave Mia, either. I stayed to intercept the abuse. I took the hits so Mia wouldn't have to."
Julian’s breath hitched. The ruthless syndicate boss, a man who commanded empires with a flick of his wrist, looked at the battered, terrified woman in front of him and felt his heart physically ache.
"You stayed in hell," Julian murmured, his voice laced with profound awe, "to protect my daughter."

Clara nodded weakly.
Julian pulled his phone from his pocket. His eyes were devoid of mercy. "Watch over Mia," he instructed. "I have a fiancé to deal with."
