Chapter 5 - Shadows and Names

Clara hesitated. Her heart hammered against her bruised ribs. She had spent three years guarding her secret, knowing that speaking his name could summon the devil himself.

But looking into Julian Romano’s eyes, she saw an impenetrable fortress.

"His name is Marcus Thorne," Clara whispered into the quiet room. "He was... he was a debt collector for a rival family in Chicago. We dated when I was young and stupid. When I tried to leave, he nearly beat me to death. He told me that if I ever ran, he would hunt me down and finish the job."

Julian’s jaw tightened, a dangerous muscle ticking in his cheek. He knew of Marcus Thorne. A low-level enforcer. A sadist. A man who preyed on the weak because he lacked the courage to face real power.

"Vanessa found out," Clara continued, her voice trembling. "She snooped through my belongings and found my old driver's license. She threatened to call him if I ever told you about Mia."

Julian reached out, his large, warm hand gently covering Clara’s trembling fingers. It was a gesture of profound comfort, startling them both.

"Marcus Thorne is a dead man walking," Julian stated, his tone devoid of anger, replaced by cold, absolute certainty.

Clara gasped, pulling her hand back slightly. "No! You can't get involved. If he knows where I am—"

"Clara, look at me," Julian interrupted gently, commanding her gaze. "You are no longer a runaway. You are under the protection of the Romano family. From this moment forward, you do not look over your shoulder. You do not flinch. Because anyone who wishes to harm you will have to go through me. And nobody goes through me."

For the first time in three years, Clara looked into a man's eyes and didn't see a threat. She saw a shield. The tears she had been holding back finally fell, not from fear, but from the overwhelming, exhausting relief of finally being safe.
