Chapter 10 - The Apex Predator

Julian Romano stood in the shattered doorway of the nursery.

He had received the alert the moment the security feed cut out. He had driven his armored car through the front gates at a hundred miles an hour, not waiting for his security team to secure the perimeter.

Julian didn't look like a businessman anymore. He looked like the devil himself.

Marcus turned, his eyes widening in sheer terror as he realized who was standing in the doorway. He released Clara's throat and scrambled for his dropped pistol, but Julian was faster.

With terrifying speed, Julian crossed the room. He didn't use a weapon. He didn't need one. He grabbed Marcus by the collar of his wet coat and hurled him across the room like a ragdoll. Marcus crashed into the reinforced glass window, shattering it, groaning in agony.

Julian stalked toward him, his face an impenetrable mask of lethal fury.

"You broke into my home," Julian stated, his voice dangerously calm. He delivered a brutal, calculated kick to Marcus’s ribs. The crack was audible over the rain.

"You threatened my daughter." Julian grabbed Marcus by the throat, hoisting the massive man entirely off the ground, pinning him against the wall. Marcus gasped, his legs kicking uselessly in the air.

"But worst of all," Julian whispered, his icy blue eyes boring into Marcus’s terrified soul, "you put your hands on my woman."

Julian threw a devastating right hook. Marcus’s eyes rolled back in his head, and he crumpled to the floor, completely unconscious.

Julian didn't look at the broken man at his feet. He immediately turned and rushed to Clara. He dropped to his knees, his hands gently framing her bruised face, his thumbs wiping away a drop of blood from the corner of her mouth.

"Are you okay? Clara, look at me," Julian pleaded, his voice breaking with raw panic.

Clara looked up into his eyes, gasping for air, and managed a small, triumphant smile. "I didn't flinch."
