Chapter 4 - The Night Watch

The VIP suite at the Romano medical facility was dimly lit, bathed in the soft amber glow of a bedside lamp. Mia was sleeping peacefully, her fractured arm secured in a tiny, colorful cast.
Julian stood in the doorway, watching the scene unfold.
Clara was curled in the uncomfortable vinyl armchair next to the bed. She had refused the pain medication Dr. Vance offered for her ribs, insisting she needed a clear head to watch over Mia. Her eyes were heavy with exhaustion, her uniform crumpled and stained, but she kept a protective hand resting gently on Mia’s uninjured arm.
Julian stepped quietly into the room. Clara flinched instantly, a trauma response so deeply ingrained it made Julian’s chest tighten.
"It's just me," Julian murmured softly, taking a seat on the edge of Mia’s bed.
Clara relaxed slightly, pulling her hand back. "Is she... is Vanessa gone?"
"She is permanently exiled," Julian promised. He looked at Clara, really looking at her for the first time. Before today, she had been a quiet, efficient shadow in his home. Now, he saw the fierce, unyielding warrior beneath the timid exterior. "You saved my daughter's life, Clara. I owe you a debt I can never repay."
"You don't owe me anything," Clara whispered, looking down at her lap. "I love Mia. She’s... she’s the only good thing I have in this world."
Julian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Dr. Vance told me about your ribs. You took a heavy blow. Why didn't you fight back?"
Clara offered a bitter, self-deprecating smile. "I learned a long time ago that fighting back only makes them hit harder."

The admission hung heavily in the quiet room. Julian recognized the signs. He saw the way she constantly mapped out the exits in a room, the way she flinched at sudden noises, the way she made herself as small as possible.
"Who did this to you, Clara?" Julian asked, his voice gentle but demanding the truth. "Who are you running from?"
