Chapter 6 - The True Motive

Late that afternoon, Marcus returned to the hospital carrying a heavy leather briefcase that looked like it had been dragged through a war zone.

He locked the hospital room door behind him and pulled the privacy curtain across the window looking out into the corridor.

The seriousness in his posture instantly made my stomach tighten with anxiety.

This wasn't just about Julian’s violent temper anymore; something much darker was surfacing.

“I spent the entire night going through the endowment’s internal ledgers from the last three fiscal quarters,” Marcus said.

He placed a stack of highlighted financial spreadsheets directly across my lap.

“I knew Julian was desperate to discredit you at the gala, Clara, but a man doesn't risk committing a public felony just out of sibling jealousy.”

He looked me dead in the eye and told me that Julian was terrified of something else entirely.

I looked down at the documents, my eyes tracing the columns of red numbers and flagged wire transfers.

“Terrified of what, Marcus? The annual independent audit isn't scheduled until the end of the month.”

“That’s exactly it,” Marcus said, pointing his pen at a series of transactions routed through a web of offshore consulting firms.

“For the past fourteen months, Julian has been quietly siphoning funds out of the Vance Emergency Medical Relief Fund.”

That fund was the very project our father had established before he died to help underprivileged children.

“We’re looking at nearly four and a half million dollars in unaccounted withdrawals routed to the Cayman Islands.”

The room seemed to spin slightly as the horrific realization hit my chest.

“He was embezzling from our father’s charity, but why attack me in front of everyone?”

“Because according to the foundation’s bylaws, if a board member is proven to be mentally unstable, their voting rights are automatically revoked,” Marcus explained.

His voice dropped to a grim, chilling whisper as he laid out Julian's master plan.

“If Julian could convince the board that you were a pathological liar faking your paralysis, he could have initiated an immediate emergency vote to strip you of your co-chairmanship.”

With me out of the way, Julian would have had total authority to seal the financial ledgers before the auditors arrived next week.

I stared at the spreadsheets, my hands trembling with a cold, clarifying rage.

“He wasn't just trying to humiliate me; he was trying to destroy my sanity to cover up his own financial crimes.”
