Chapter 10 - The Mechanic’s Confession

Armed with the connection between Julian’s shell company and the destruction of my vehicle, Marcus wasted no time.
He hired a team of elite private investigators led by an ex-federal agent named Thomas Vance, who specialized in tracking corporate corruption.
By Tuesday afternoon, while I was undergoing electro-stimulation physical therapy with Dr. Rostova, Marcus burst into the clinic's conference room.
He didn't say a word; he simply connected a secure flash drive to the wall monitor and hit play on a video file.
The screen flickered to life, showing a dimly lit office where Thomas sat across a metal table from a nervous, chain-smoking man.
A time-stamp in the corner indicated the recording had been made less than six hours ago in Manchester, New Hampshire.
“State your name for the record,” Thomas’s recorded voice instructed firmly.
“Gary Miller,” the man mumbled, staring nervously at his shaking, nicotine-stained hands.
“I used to be the lead service technician at the luxury dealership where the Vance family brought their vehicles back in 2022.”
On screen, Thomas slid a crisp, high-gloss headshot of Julian Vance across the metal table.
“Do you recognize this individual, Mr. Miller, and remind us what he paid you forty thousand dollars in cash to do?”
Gary Miller swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the camera before sagging in absolute, guilty defeat.
“He came into the service bay after hours because he knew I was drowning in my daughter’s medical bills.”
He confessed that Julian gave him an envelope of hundreds and told him to alter the hydraulic brake lines on my blue sedan.
“He said he just wanted to cause a minor fender bender to scare her into taking time off from work,” Gary wept.
“When I saw the news about the crash and her spine, I tried to give the money back, but he threatened to kill my family.”
I sat frozen in my wheelchair, staring at the frozen image of the weeping mechanic on the monitor.

Four years of physical agony and mourning my independence had been bought and paid for with forty thousand dollars in dirty cash.
My own brother had sold my life and my legs for a stack of hundred-dollar bills.
