Chapter 2 - Steel Handcuffs and Velvet Ropes

The heavy oak doors of the Ritz-Carlton grand salon burst open.
Six Boston police officers marched in, accompanied by a team of paramedics carrying a heavy spinal board and trauma gear.
The officers scanned the room, their hands resting cautiously on their duty belts as they took in the surreal scene.
A formal winter gala had been transformed into a disaster zone of shattered glass, spilled wine, and a crippled woman lying in the wreckage.
Dr. Elena Rostova stood immediately, waving the paramedics over with authoritative precision.
“Over here! Victim has pre-existing lower-body paralysis, possible spinal cord compression from a blunt-force trauma fall, and a minor head laceration.”
She ordered them to bring a neck brace and a backboard immediately.
As the medical team swarmed me with practiced efficiency, two lead officers approached the center of the room.
“Who is the assailant?” the senior officer asked, his voice cutting through the rising murmur of the crowd.
At least twenty hands pointed directly at Julian without hesitation.
He backed up against a velvet-draped pillar, his face pale and sweating under the chandelier lights.
“Officers, there has been a ridiculous misunderstanding,” Julian stammered, smoothing down his charcoal suit jacket in a desperate attempt to regain his social authority.
“I am Julian Vance, this is my family’s endowment gala, and that woman is my sister.”
He claimed I had been suffering from psychological delusions and that he was merely attempting to help me.
“Save your breath, Mr. Vance,” a voice interrupted from the front row of tables.
It was Harrison Cole, a prominent media executive whose smartphone was still held level, its red recording light blinking steadily.
“I have the entire incident recorded in 4K resolution.”
He confirmed to the police that Julian had threatened me, grabbed my mobility device, and violently shoved me backward into the display.
It was a deliberate, unprovoked assault on a disabled person.
The senior officer didn’t wait to hear another word from my brother.
He unclipped his handcuffs and stepped directly into Julian’s personal space.
“Julian Vance, you are under arrest for felony assault and battery on a disabled individual, and reckless endangerment.”
He ordered Julian to turn around and place his hands behind his back.
As the steel cuffs clicked shut around my brother’s wrists, the sound echoed louder than the shattering glass had just minutes before.

My stepmother, Victoria, finally let out a piercing wail, burying her face in my uncle’s shoulder.
Julian was dragged out through the ballroom doors in front of three hundred recording cameras.
