Chapter 18 - Courtroom Showdown

By mid-afternoon, the prosecution was ready to enter their final piece of evidence into the judicial record.
They presented the 4K video of the assault at the Ritz-Carlton gala, paired with Julian’s recorded phone confession.
The lights in the courtroom dimmed, and the massive eighty-inch monitors mounted on the walls flickered to life.
Once again, the grand salon of the Ritz-Carlton appeared in high-definition resolution before the silent crowd.
The entire courtroom watched as Julian cornered my wheelchair, his face twisted with rage, shouting his infamous accusation.
“See? She can move when she wants to! She’s been playing all of you!” his recorded voice echoed through the speakers.
Then came the violent shove that tipped my wheelchair backward into the fourteen-thousand-dollar crystal tower.
The sound of a thousand glass flutes shattering echoed through the federal courtroom with chilling, visceral clarity.
Immediately following the video, the prosecutor played the audio recording of Julian’s phone call while fleeing Boston.
“You were supposed to die on that turnpike, Clara... I should have made sure the car burned when it went off the guardrail.”
When the lights came back up, several jurors were weeping openly while others glared at Julian with naked hatred.
Even his court-appointed public defenders looked down at their legal pads, unable to mount a single coherent objection.
Judge Jenkins turned her gaze toward the prosecution table, her expression grave and deeply respectful.
“Does the victim wish to make a formal impact statement before this court considers summary judgment and sentencing?”
At the prosecution table, Marcus Vance stood up and stepped to the side, clearing the pathway between my desk and the center podium.
For the entire trial, I had remained seated in my wheelchair, my lap covered by a formal wool blanket.

I reached down, pulled the blanket away from my legs, and locked the wheels of my chair with a loud click.
Then, placing my hands firmly on the armrests, I engaged my core muscles and pushed myself up into the air.
