Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Coup

On Friday morning, exactly ten days after the disastrous Ritz-Carlton gala, the Vance Endowment’s Board of Directors convened an emergency session.

With Julian still out on ten-million-dollar bail and restricted by court order from approaching the building, Victoria attempted to seize control.

She called the meeting to appoint herself temporary executive director to allegedly stabilize the family brand.

She certainly didn't expect me to show up at the headquarters.

When the heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open, the room of twenty executives fell into a dead, shocked silence.

I entered independently, propelling my own wheelchair with steady, measured strokes, dressed in a sharp navy business suit.

Flanking me on my right was Marcus Vance carrying three thick binders of forensic evidence.

On my left was Dr. Elena Rostova, representing the medical and charitable oversight committees.

Victoria stood up at the head of the long conference table, her face flushing crimson as she gripped her leather portfolio.

“Clara! This is a closed executive session for active voting members only.”

She claimed it was entirely inappropriate for me to be there without preliminary medical clearance given my recent trauma.

“I am the co-chair of this endowment, Victoria,” I said, my voice ringing clear and steady across the polished wood table.

I wheeled myself directly to the opposite end of the table, locking my wheels in place with a decisive click.

“And I am not on medical leave; I am here to present the results of an independent internal audit conducted by our Chief Financial Officer.”

Before Victoria could protest, Marcus began distributing copies of the binders to every seated board member around the table.

The room filled with the rustle of turning pages, followed almost instantly by sharp intakes of breath and muttered curses.

The city’s top philanthropists stared in horror at the irrefutable proof of Julian’s systematic embezzlement.

“What you are looking at is four point five million dollars in stolen charitable assets,” I addressed the room firmly.

“The money was siphoned from the emergency medical relief fund by Julian Vance to cover personal gambling debts and illegal hush-money payments.”

I informed them that I had already submitted these exact ledgers to the United States Attorney’s Office.

“As of ten minutes ago, federal warrants have been issued for Julian’s arrest on charges of wire fraud and attempted murder.”
