Chapter 13 - The Press Conference

By Monday morning, the story had transcended local Boston news and become a national media sensation.
The combination of high-society drama, viral video evidence, millions in embezzlement, and a cold-blooded attempted murder plot was too potent to ignore.
Satellite broadcast trucks lined the streets outside the Vance Endowment building, their satellite dishes raised toward the gray winter sky.
At precisely ten o’clock, I rolled out through the glass doors onto the top of the granite entrance steps.
I was immediately surrounded by a dozen microphones and over fifty flashing cameras from major news networks.
Marcus stood directly behind my right shoulder as a constant anchor, while Dr. Rostova stood to my left representing the medical community.
I adjusted the lapel microphone attached to my navy coat and looked directly into the primary broadcast camera lens.
For four years, I had hidden from the public eye, feeling broken and defined by the metal wheels beneath me.
Today, I felt more powerful than I ever had when I could stand on my own two feet.
“Good morning,” I began, my voice projecting clearly over the PA system and silencing the shouting reporters.
“For the past four years, I believed that a tragic accident had taken my mobility and changed the trajectory of my life.”
I explained how ten days ago at the Ritz-Carlton, my brother Julian had attacked me in public and called my disability a lie.
“Today, I am releasing the full findings of an independent financial and forensic investigation to the public and federal authorities.”
I revealed that Julian did not just assault me; he systematically embezzled four point five million dollars from our late father's medical relief funds.
“And when he feared I would uncover his theft, he paid to have my vehicle sabotaged in 2022 in a failed attempt to take my life.”
The crowd of reporters erupted into a frenzy of shouted questions and blinding camera flashes.
I raised my hand to ask for silence, my gaze hardening as I delivered my final message to the public.

“To anyone who has ever been abused, silenced, or told that their trauma was invalid by those who claim to love them: do not let them rewrite your reality.”
I promised that the Vance Endowment was being fully reorganized and that every stolen dollar would be recovered for the victims.
