Chapter 17 - Courtroom Showdown

The atmosphere inside the federal courthouse the next morning was electric with undeniable anticipation.
Every bench in the wood-paneled courtroom was filled to capacity with prosecutors, journalists, board members, and disability rights advocates.
When the bailiff announced the arrival of Honorable Judge Sarah Jenkins, the entire room rose respectfully to its feet.
At the defense table, Julian sat hunched in his orange prison jumpsuit, his wrists and ankles shackled with heavy steel chains.
He looked completely broken, staring blankly at the table, stripped of his expensive suits, his money, and his arrogance.
Across the aisle, my stepmother Victoria sat in the second row of the gallery wearing black sunglasses and looking entirely isolated.
The lead federal prosecutor began her opening statement, painting a devastating masterpiece of ambition, greed, and sociopathic cruelty.
She walked the jury through the timeline, starting with our father’s discovery of the missing charity funds in 2021.
She detailed the paid sabotage of my brakes in 2022 and culminated in the dramatic, violent assault at the Ritz-Carlton gala.
To anchor the medical testimony, Dr. Elena Rostova took the witness stand before the lunch recess.
Dressed in a sharp gray professional suit, she radiated clinical authority as she explained the medical evidence to the jury.
“When I examined Clara Vance on the ballroom floor, she was suffering from acute blunt-force trauma and a concussion,” Elena testified clearly.
“However, during our subsequent imaging review, we uncovered undeniable evidence that her 2022 medical reports had been deliberately altered.”
She explained that Julian had bribed corrupt doctors to falsify scans showing a severed spinal cord when it was only nerve compression.
“Julian Vance did not merely push a paralyzed woman into a wall of glass,” Elena stated firmly to the horrified courtroom.

“He spent four years paying medical professionals to ensure she remained trapped in a wheelchair so he could steal her inheritance unchecked.”
The jurors shook their heads in absolute disgust, several of them refusing to even look in Julian's direction.
