Chapter 15 - The Paper Trail of Treachery

With Julian’s explosive, self-destructive confession on the official deposition record, his criminal defense completely collapsed.

While the legal team prepared for the formal sentencing hearing, Marcus and I remained buried in the foundation’s archives.

We were determined to clean out every last remnant of corruption from the Vance family name before relaunching the charity.

We sat in the executive office on the thirty-second floor, surrounded by boxes of physical files dating back a decade.

While digging through a locked fireproof filing cabinet stored in Victoria’s former office, Marcus discovered a thick, unmarked manila envelope.

“Clara, you need to see this,” Marcus said, his voice unusually subdued as he laid the documents out in front of me.

“It’s from Dad’s personal estate attorney, dated six months before his fatal heart attack.”

I picked up the brittle letters and began to read, my breath catching in my throat as the truth resolved.

Our father had discovered Julian’s early financial irregularities long before anyone else in the family ever suspected a thing.

The correspondence was a series of drafted codicils to his last will and testament, formally disinheriting Julian from the Vance Family Trust.

Our father was preparing to remove Julian completely from the succession line of the Endowment to protect the family legacy.

“He knew,” I whispered, tears welling in my eyes as I traced my father’s familiar signature at the bottom of a draft letter.

“Dad knew Julian was stealing from the charity even back then, and he was going to fire him publicly.”

“Look at the date of the final letter, Clara,” Marcus pointed out gently, tapping a timestamp on the top sheet.

The stamp read clearly in red ink: OCTOBER 14th, 2021.

I felt a paralyzing chill settle deep into my bones as I realized the timeline.

“That was three days before Dad suffered his fatal heart attack at the summer estate in Newport.”

Marcus looked at me, his eyes reflecting the same horrific, unspoken suspicion that had just materialized in my own mind.

“We may never be able to prove what happened in Newport that weekend, Clara,” Marcus said quietly.

“But we know Julian was staying at the house when Dad’s heart medication mysteriously went missing from the master suite.”

Julian hadn't just started his reign of terror with my car accident; he had been clearing his path to the family fortune for years.
