Chapter 3 - Sterile Walls and Secret Fears

The ride to Massachusetts General Hospital was a blur of flashing red and blue lights and the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor.
Throughout the chaos, I felt the steady, grounding presence of Marcus Vance by my side.
As the endowment’s Chief Financial Officer and my late father’s most trusted protege, Marcus had refused to leave me alone for a second.
He rode in the front of the ambulance and practically sprinted alongside my stretcher as the paramedics wheeled me through the emergency room doors.
Once inside the trauma bay, the medical chaos intensified.
Nurses cut away the wine-soaked fabric of my formal evening gown, replacing it with a sterile hospital gown.
Attending physicians shone penlights into my pupils and ran neurological sensory tests along my spine.
Every time they dragged a pin across my calves and ankles, asking if I felt the prick, my answer remained the same.
I felt nothing at all, just the familiar, terrifying void that had defined my physical existence since the car crash four years ago.
When the primary assessments were complete, I was wheeled into a private imaging holding suite to await an MRI.
The adrenaline began to fade, replaced by a bone-deep, shivering exhaustion that made my teeth chatter.
I looked at the ceiling tiles, counting them silently to keep myself from screaming out loud.
“The CT scan cleared you of any internal hemorrhaging,” Marcus said quietly, stepping into the small cubicle with two paper cups of lukewarm tea.
He looked out of place in his ruined formal shirt, his sleeves rolled up to the elbows and a dark stain of sparkling wine marking his left knee.
“Dr. Rostova is reviewing your X-rays with the Chief of Orthopedics right now.”
He told me that my structural hardware from the 2022 spinal surgery appeared completely intact.
“He wanted to destroy me, Marcus,” I whispered, my voice trembling as the emotional shockwave finally hit my chest.
“In front of everyone our father ever worked with, he wanted them to look at me and see a liar.”
Marcus pulled up a stool and sat down, his jaw tight with suppressed rage.
“Julian has always been intimidated by your mind, Clara, because he knows you are twice the leader he could ever hope to be.”

He leaned in closer, his eyes dark with determination.
“Tonight, he didn't just expose his cruelty to the world; he handed us the exact weapon we need to end his control over the foundation forever.”
