Chapter 8 - The Bail Hearing

The courtroom was packed with reporters. The story of the "Evil Mother-in-Law" had leaked to the local press, turning it into a media sensation.

Beatrice stood before the judge in a county-issued jumpsuit, looking frail and pathetic. Her high-priced defense attorney argued that Beatrice was suffering from early-onset dementia and that the incident was a tragic accident caused by mental decline. He requested bail be set so she could seek psychiatric treatment.

The prosecutor, armed with the video and the DNA test, pushed back hard. “Your Honor, this was premeditated attempted murder.”

Despite the prosecution’s arguments, the judge—a strict but procedural man—granted bail, setting it at $1.5 million.

Beatrice’s wealthy sister posted the bond. As Beatrice was led out of the courtroom, she turned and locked eyes with Sarah. She didn't look like a woman with dementia. She looked like a predator who had just been unchained.
