Chapter 1 - The Blue Lights

The silence in the emergency room waiting area was suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic, agonizing beep of the monitors from behind the swinging doors where they had taken Lucas. Daniel stared at his phone, the video of his mother poisoning the tart looping endlessly. The dark vial. The calculated stirring. The absolute lack of hesitation.
“I’m calling the police,” Daniel said, his voice trembling not with fear, but with a volcanic rage.
Sarah sat frozen, her hands covered in her son’s vomit. She couldn't process the magnitude of the betrayal. Beatrice had always been cruel, but attempted murder? To poison a four-year-old child?
Within ten minutes, two Austin Police Department detectives arrived at the ER. Daniel handed over his phone without a word. Detective Ramirez watched the forty-second clip, his expression hardening. “Where is this woman right now?”
“At my house,” Daniel replied, his jaw clenched so tight it looked ready to fracture. “Acting like she’s the victim.”

Ramirez immediately radioed for a squad car to be dispatched to the residence. Sarah grabbed Daniel’s hand as the officers left. “She kicked the plate out of his hands, Daniel. She poisoned the whole pie, realized Lucas might give her a piece, and panicked to save herself. She let him eat the filling and didn't say a word.”
Daniel pulled Sarah into his chest. “She is never breathing the same air as our family again. I swear to you.”
