Chapter 5 - The Flying Monkeys

By noon, the news of Beatrice’s arrest had spread through the family like wildfire. And just as predictably, the toxic enablers began to swarm.

Sarah woke up to a barrage of text messages on her phone. They weren't asking about Lucas. They were attacking her.

“How could you put your mother-in-law in jail over a misunderstanding?” texted Aunt Martha.

“Beatrice is a respected woman in this community. You are destroying this family, Sarah,” wrote a cousin.

Sarah’s blood boiled. She didn't cry. She didn't cower. She marched out to the hallway, recorded a quick video of herself, and uploaded it to the family group chat.

“My four-year-old son is in the ICU with a feeding tube because Beatrice poured antifreeze into his food. If any of you ever text me again defending the woman who tried to murder a child, I will hand your messages over to the police as accomplices after the fact. Rot in hell.”

She hit send. Within minutes, the group chat went dead silent. The enabling stopped. The line had been drawn, and Sarah was standing firmly on the side of war.
