Chapter 4 - The Poisonous Seed

The next morning, Lucas’s condition stabilized. His kidneys were functioning, and the doctors were optimistic. As Sarah slept in the uncomfortable plastic chair beside his bed, Daniel walked out to the hospital courtyard to clear his head.
His phone buzzed. It was an unknown number. He answered it.
“Daniel,” his mother’s voice hissed through the line. She was calling from the county jail.
“Do not ever contact me again,” Daniel snarled, preparing to hang up.
“Listen to me!” she snapped. “I did it to protect you! She is a liar, Daniel! That boy is not yours! I hired a private investigator months ago. Sarah had an affair before you got married. I wanted her to leave, to take her bastard child and run! The poison was just supposed to make him sick so she would look like an unfit mother. I didn't want him to die!”
Daniel froze. The accusation from the patio—“Do not ever call me grandma, because you are no grandson of this family!”—echoed in his mind.

“You’re a psychotic liar,” Daniel said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “You tried to murder an innocent child because of a paranoid delusion. You will rot in a cell, Beatrice.”
He ended the call, blocking the number. He didn't doubt Sarah for a second. But he knew that to completely destroy his mother’s defense in court, he needed absolute, undeniable proof. He immediately called a private lab to arrange an expedited DNA test.
