Chapter 6 - The Results

Two days later, Lucas opened his eyes.
Sarah wept as her little boy reached out, his tiny fingers grasping hers. “Mommy? Are we going home?”
“Soon, baby. So soon,” she kissed his forehead.
While Sarah tended to Lucas, Daniel met with the courier in the hospital lobby. He tore open the manila envelope containing the DNA test results. He scanned down to the final line, his heart pounding.
Probability of Paternity: 99.999%.

Daniel laughed, a bitter, exhausted sound. His mother had constructed a complete fantasy in her head to justify her hatred for Sarah and Lucas. She had convinced herself of a lie, and almost killed a child because of it.
Daniel took a picture of the document and emailed it directly to his mother’s defense attorney with a subject line that read: “Your client’s motive is a lie. See you in court.”
