Chapter 4 - The Hidden Ally

Elena visited me the next morning, carrying a massive basket of organic fruit to maintain appearances.
She hugged me tightly, pressing a tiny, encrypted USB drive into the palm of my hand.
She stepped back and wiped fake tears from her eyes for the benefit of the security cameras.
"The house is a crime scene, but the police missed the transmitter entirely," she whispered softly.
She confirmed that the audio recording was crystal clear and absolutely devastating.
You could hear Julian's footsteps, his cruel taunts, and the exact moment my breath stopped.
Even worse for him, the recording captured his manic monologue while he thought I was dead.
He had confessed to stealing millions from his top three investors to fund his secret offshore accounts.
He had literally handed us the keys to his own federal prison cell.
I hid the USB drive inside the lining of my maternity bra, the safest place in the room.
Elena informed me that Julian was currently meeting with his defense attorneys.
He was preparing to sue the city for failing to protect his wealthy neighborhood from imaginary intruders.
His arrogance was so massive that it blinded him to his own impending doom.
I smiled for the first time in days, a dark, dangerous smirk that terrified even Elena.
I wrote on my notepad, instructing her to start contacting his defrauded investors anonymously.
We were going to slowly drain his power before we ever revealed the truth to the authorities.

I wanted him to feel the exact same terror and helplessness I felt when his hands were on my throat.
The countdown to his destruction had officially begun.
