Chapter 16 - The Plea Deal

Faced with a mountain of undeniable evidence and a hostile jury pool, Julian’s new public defender was desperate.
He approached the prosecutor’s office, begging for a plea deal to avoid the death penalty or a life sentence.
The prosecutor brought the offer directly to me, asking for my final approval.
Julian was willing to plead guilty to all charges in exchange for a fifty-year sentence without parole.
He would also forfeit all of his remaining hidden assets to a trust fund for our daughter, Lily.
I sat in the prosecutor's office, staring at the legal documents that would finalize Julian's doom.
A trial would be emotionally exhausting, forcing me to relive the trauma over and over again in public.
A plea deal meant he would go directly to a maximum-security prison for the rest of his natural life.
He would never breathe free air again, and he would never see the daughter he tried to murder.
I picked up the pen and signed my name, accepting his complete and utter surrender.
I felt a massive, suffocating weight completely lift off my chest for the first time in years.
The monster had officially signed his own life away.

I walked out of the office and into the bright, warm sunlight, breathing in the beautiful air of freedom.
The war was officially over, and I was the undisputed victor.
