Chapter 5 - Sylvia's Betrayal

In Interrogation Room B, just down the hall, Sylvia was already cracking under the immense pressure. Unlike Marcus, who stubbornly clung to his massive ego and sense of entitlement, Sylvia was driven purely by cowardly self-preservation. She sat shivering violently in her ruined silk blouse, her expensive jewelry having been unceremoniously confiscated and bagged by the booking officer.
I asked Detective Miller to let me step into the room. When I pushed the heavy metal door open, Sylvia’s eyes darted wildly toward me. “Clara! Thank God! Tell them! Tell them Marcus did all of this! I tried to stop him, I swear to you I tried, but he’s crazy!”
I didn’t say a word. I simply pulled out my phone, navigated to the secure audio file, and hit play. Mom’s frail, terrified voice filled the cold, echoing room: “Sylvia strikes me when I won't sign the property transfers. They tell me no one will believe an old woman.”

Sylvia clamped her manicured hands tightly over her ears, shaking her head. “She’s lying! She’s senile! You can’t use that!”
“The Department of Justice doesn’t care about your pathetic excuses, Sylvia,” I said coldly, leaning over the table to look her dead in the eye. “We have the forged notary seal. We have the discontinued clinic letterhead. You’re looking at twenty years minimum in a federal penitentiary. Your only way out of a maximum-security cell is to give me the offshore account numbers right now.”
