Chapter 19 - The Sentencing

Two incredibly long weeks later, Judge Thorne—the exact same honorable judge who had originally signed the initial emergency protective order—presided over the final sentencing hearing. He looked down at Marcus and Sylvia from his high bench with absolute, unbridled contempt.
“In my thirty long years on the judicial bench, I have rarely, if ever, seen such highly calculated, sociopathic, and devastating cruelty inflicted upon a loving parent,” the judge stated, his deep voice echoing with finality. “You selfishly stole her money, but far more unforgivably, you violently tried to steal her human dignity. Marcus and Sylvia Hayes, I hereby sentence you both to thirty-five consecutive years in federal prison, entirely without the possibility of early parole.”
The heavy wooden gavel banged loudly, officially finalizing their total destruction. As the armed bailiffs aggressively dragged them away in chains, Marcus looked back at me one last, desperate time. I didn’t smile. I just turned my back on him forever.
