Chapter 16 - The Star Witness

When Mom finally took the heavy wooden witness stand, the entire packed courtroom collectively held its breath. She wore a beautifully tailored, elegant navy suit, looking incredibly dignified, highly intelligent, and remarkably strong. She didn’t look anything like a broken victim; she looked like a fierce, undeniable survivor.

Under my incredibly gentle, methodical direct examination, she bravely recounted the entire nightmare. She detailed the horrific zip-ties, the brutal physical beatings, and the devastating psychological torture of being told repeatedly that she was going completely insane.

When the desperate defense attorney aggressively tried to cross-examine her, attempting to confuse her about specific dates and times, she shut him down with absolute surgical precision. “I may be eighty years old, counselor,” she said firmly, looking directly and fearlessly at Marcus, “but I remember exactly what my own son did to me. And I will absolutely never, ever forget it.”
