Chapter 1 - The Trap Is Set

I finished my coffee in silence, the ceramic mug clinking softly against the granite countertop. Marcus and Sylvia were already mentally spending Mom’s remaining assets, their sheer smugness radiating like toxic heat in the otherwise sterile kitchen. Sylvia was idly scrolling through a luxury real estate website on her phone, occasionally pointing out sprawling vacation homes to my brother, who nodded with the unearned confidence of a man who believed he had outsmarted the world. They were completely oblivious to the digital trap that was rapidly closing around them. I gathered my overnight bag, making sure to deliberately pick up the manila folder of forged documents and slide it into my leather tote. I walked into the living room and gave Mom a tight, reassuring hug. I felt her frail body tremble beneath the heavy woolen sweater she still wore, but I pressed my cheek against hers and whispered softly in her ear, “Just three more hours. Be brave. I love you.”

Sylvia rolled her eyes from the kitchen island, leaning against the doorframe with a sigh of exaggerated annoyance. “Don’t make a scene, Clara. We’ll take perfectly good care of her, just like we always do. You just focus on your little state job.”

“I’m absolutely sure you will,” I replied, my voice dangerously even and devoid of any emotion they could interpret as suspicion.

I walked out to my car, the bright afternoon sun momentarily blinding me. I didn’t immediately head for the interstate. Instead, I drove exactly three blocks away, parked behind an abandoned diner, and picked up my encrypted work phone. The local tactical unit was already on standby, waiting for my green light. The ex parte protective order had been signed by Magistrate Davis ten minutes ago, and my team of forensic accountants was already freezing every single bank account tied to Marcus’s social security number. The trap was fully set. Marcus and Sylvia thought they had won the ultimate prize, but they had just handed a federal prosecutor the exact murder weapon needed to destroy their lives forever.
