Chapter 14 - Opening Statements

The grand courtroom was packed to the absolute brim with spectators and journalists. I stood confidently before the jury box, making deliberate, intense eye contact with each of the twelve men and women who would decide my brother's ultimate fate.

“Greed is a deadly, insidious poison,” I began, my voice ringing clear and incredibly steady in the completely silent room. “It fundamentally corrupts the human soul and turns trusted family members into unrecognizable monsters. Over the next week, you will hear a verified story of unimaginable, calculated cruelty. You will see exactly how Marcus and Sylvia Hayes systematically tortured, imprisoned, and robbed the very woman who gave Marcus life. They foolishly believed her advanced age made her invisible. They believed no one would ever listen to a frightened old woman. They were dead wrong.”

I saw two jurors already wiping tears from their eyes. Marcus sat completely stone-faced at the defense table, but I could clearly see his pale hands trembling violently beneath the wooden surface.
