Chapter 12 - Mom Finds Her Voice

Six long, grueling months passed. Mom’s terrible physical wounds had finally healed, but the deep psychological scars required intensive, daily therapy. Slowly but surely, the vibrant, incredibly sharp woman I remembered from my childhood began to return to the surface. She gained back the weight she had lost, her bright eyes regained their joyful spark, and her memory—which Marcus had aggressively insisted was completely failing—proved to be as sharp and unyielding as a steel trap.

“I want to testify in court,” she told me firmly one beautiful Sunday afternoon as we walked slowly through the clinic’s blooming gardens.

“Mom, you really don’t have to do that. We have more than enough hard evidence to convict them without putting you through that immense emotional stress.”

She stopped walking and looked me directly in the eye, her posture straight and proud. “They tried to completely erase me, Clara. They treated me like a useless ghost in my own home. I need them to see that I am still alive, and I am not afraid of them anymore.”
