Chapter 2 - The Raid

Exactly three hours later, the suffocating silence of the pristine suburban neighborhood was violently shattered by the screech of heavy tires. Three unmarked black SUVs and two fully marked police cruisers swarmed Marcus’s immaculate, perfectly manicured lawn. I stepped out of the lead vehicle, flanked by four heavily armed tactical officers and a senior Adult Protective Services investigator who looked ready to tear a door off its hinges. The flashing red and blue lights painted the front of the house in a chaotic, rhythmic strobe.

Marcus opened the front door, still holding a crystal glass of scotch. His face twisted rapidly from mild annoyance to absolute, paralyzing shock as the officers marched up the front steps. “What the hell is this?” he demanded, his voice cracking as he instinctively tried to block the doorway with his body.

“Step aside, Marcus,” I said, my voice echoing with the cold, immovable authority of the federal government.

“Clara? Are you insane? You can’t just bring the police to my house! I am my mother’s legal guardian!” he shouted, the scotch spilling over the rim of his glass and splashing onto his expensive Italian leather shoes.

Before he could finish his pathetic tirade, two officers grabbed his arms, spinning him around forcefully and slamming him face-first against his custom oak door. The metallic click of heavy handcuffs echoed loudly across the porch. Sylvia’s shrill, panicked scream pierced the air from inside the house as more officers swarmed the living room, securing the perimeter. It was finally time to tear their perfect, fraudulent world down to the studs, and I was going to enjoy watching every single second of their spectacular downfall.
