Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Showdown

The family courtroom was entirely quiet and highly sterile as we took our seats at the plaintiff's table.
My mother sat nervously across the aisle, wearing a cheap, heavily discounted dress she had bought at a local mall.
Her sleazy lawyer stood up proudly, launching into a deeply dramatic, entirely fabricated speech about her love for her grandchild.
He loudly claimed that Clara had completely fabricated the abuse allegations to maliciously steal the family fortune.
When it was finally our turn, Marcus Vance did not even bother making a dramatic opening statement.
He simply plugged a small flash drive directly into the courtroom's main evidence projector system.
"Your Honor, the defense would like to present Exhibit A," Marcus stated calmly, dimming the bright overhead lights.
The judge watched the massive screen as the horrific dining room video played loudly in high definition.
He saw Clara being treated like a dog, and he clearly heard my mother's deeply cruel, evil words.
The judge's face turned completely red with absolute, unadulterated fury.
"Mrs. Ashford, is that you heavily featured in this video recording?" the judge demanded fiercely.
My mother stammered wildly, desperately looking at her lawyer, who was quickly packing up his expensive briefcase.
"Your Honor, it was completely taken out of context," she cried pathetically.
Marcus then played the highly disturbing basement footage, showing my mother locking a pregnant woman in the dark pantry.
The judge aggressively slammed his heavy wooden gavel down, stopping the video immediately.
"I have seen absolutely enough of this horrifying, disgusting behavior," the judge announced loudly.
"This lawsuit is entirely dismissed with massive prejudice."
"Furthermore, I am granting a permanent, lifelong restraining order protecting Liam and Clara Ashford from this woman."
"If you ever come within one thousand feet of this family, you will go directly to federal prison."

My mother collapsed entirely into her wooden chair, violently sobbing as the harsh reality finally crushed her.
She had absolutely nothing left in the world.
