Chapter 1 - The Shattered Illusion

The blood roared in my ears like a freight train as I stood frozen in the doorway of my own dining room.
My mother, the woman who had raised me, was sitting at the head of the table sipping expensive red wine.
Her three wealthy friends were laughing maliciously, their diamond rings catching the light from the chandelier above.
And there, huddled on the cold hardwood floor, was my beautiful Clara.
She was eight months pregnant with our first child, trembling like a frightened animal.
One of the women, a snobby socialite named Beatrice, casually tossed a discarded chicken bone onto the rug.
"Fetch, little incubator," Beatrice sneered, sending the entire table into a fit of cruel giggles.
My mother smiled warmly, adjusting her pearl necklace before delivering the words that would forever destroy our relationship.
“She’s only useful until the baby is born, ladies.”
“After that, we will take the child, and she can go back to whatever gutter Liam found her in.”
Clara looked up, her beautiful eyes wide with sheer terror as she finally noticed me standing in the shadows of the hallway.
She quickly tried to scramble to her feet, her bruised knees failing her as she let out a soft cry of pain.
"Liam, please, it is just a joke," she stammered, frantically trying to protect the monsters sitting above her.
"We were just playing a silly game, everything is perfectly fine."
I did not say a single word as I walked slowly into the center of the room.
The laughter died instantly, replaced by a suffocating, heavy silence that sucked the air from the room.
My mother’s face went completely pale, her wine glass stopping halfway to her mouth.
"Liam, darling, you are home so early," my mother choked out, trying to force a fake, welcoming smile.
I ignored her completely and knelt down on the floor, gently wrapping my arms around my trembling wife.
I noticed the dark purple bruises on her pale knees, and the terrible food stains ruining her favorite maternity dress.
"Get up, Clara," I whispered softly, lifting her carefully into my arms.
"You never have to protect them from me ever again."
I turned my burning gaze toward my mother and her pathetic group of cruel friends.

"Do not speak, do not move, and do not dare to contact me," I commanded with a voice that shook the crystal glasses on the table.
I carried my sobbing wife out the front door, leaving my childhood home behind forever.
