Chapter 9 - The Unwanted Visitor

Lily was tiny—weighing just under four pounds—but she was a fighter. Hooked up to tubes in the quiet, temperature-controlled environment of the NICU, she looked fragile but stable. I spent my days alternating between Sarah’s recovery room and sitting by Lily’s incubator, singing to her softly.

On day four of our hospital stay, my security chief, a massive former Marine named Reynolds, tapped me on the shoulder while I was reading a book to Sarah. “Boss. We have a problem downstairs,” Reynolds said quietly. “Your brother is in the lobby. He found out about the birth through a leak at the corporate office. He’s causing a massive scene, demanding to see the baby.”

A fresh wave of anger washed over me. I kissed Sarah’s hand. “I’ll be right back.”

I took the elevator down to the main lobby. Julian was pacing furiously, screaming at a terrified receptionist while two hospital security guards tried to calm him down. “I’m the child’s uncle! You cannot keep me out of a public hospital!” Julian yelled, looking disheveled, his eyes bloodshot.

“You aren’t coming anywhere near my daughter, Julian,” I said, stepping out of the elevator. Julian spun around, pointing a shaking finger at me. “Arthur! Please! Mom is losing her mind. The feds raided the estate this morning! They took the computers, the files, everything. You have to call them off! I don't want to go to jail!”

“Then you shouldn't have stolen from me,” I said coldly. “Reynolds, have him removed for trespassing. If he comes back, press charges.”
