Chapter 15 - The Final Deposition

Before the criminal trial could officially begin, I was required to attend a civil deposition to legally reclaim the stolen assets from my mother’s frozen trusts. It was the first time I had seen her in person since she was arrested.
She walked into the sterile conference room in an orange jumpsuit, her wrists handcuffed to a waist chain. Her hair was completely gray, devoid of the expensive dye jobs she had religiously maintained. The arrogant, icy matriarch was gone, replaced by a hollow, bitter old woman.

She glared at me across the wooden table as the lawyers set up the recording equipment. “Are you happy, Arthur?” she spat venomously. “You destroyed your own family over a peasant girl.” I leaned forward, completely unfazed by her hatred. “My family is at home. Sarah is thriving, and your granddaughter, Lily, is healthy and perfect. You destroyed yourself because you couldn't stand the fact that I loved my wife more than I feared you.”
She flinched at the mention of Lily, a flash of genuine pain crossing her features before the bitterness masked it again. Throughout the three-hour deposition, she was forced to verbally admit, on the record, how she had forged documents and utilized dummy corporations to steal from my father’s legacy. It was the ultimate humiliation.
