Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary

The drive into the city was suffocatingly quiet, save for the rhythmic drumming of the rain against the windshield and Sarah’s shallow, unsteady breathing. I kept one hand firmly wrapped around hers, my thumb gently tracing the knuckles that were still raw and red from the scalding water. I didn’t take her to our city apartment; my mother had keys to that property. Instead, I pulled into the underground garage of the St. Regis hotel. I had already called my personal concierge while we were on the highway, securing their most private, top-floor penthouse under a corporate alias.

When we finally stepped into the expansive suite, the quiet luxury of the room felt like a different universe compared to the nightmare at the estate. I guided Sarah to the plush velvet sofa, wrapping a warm, thick blanket around her trembling shoulders. She hadn't spoken a single word since we walked out of those heavy oak doors. Her silence was a heavy weight on my chest, a stark reminder of how badly I had failed to protect her.

“Arthur,” she finally whispered, her voice cracking. She looked down at her swollen belly. “She threatened to take the baby. She said I was an unfit incubator.”

A cold, lethal fury settled into my bones. I knelt in front of her, looking directly into her tear-filled eyes. “She is never coming near you or our daughter ever again. I promise you that.” I immediately picked up my phone and dialed Dr. Evans, Sarah’s private obstetrician, demanding he come to the hotel immediately for a full examination. As we waited, I opened my laptop. The emotional shock was wearing off, replaced entirely by a calculating, ruthless drive. It was time to burn my mother’s empire to the ground.
