Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Lie

By late afternoon, the legal papers were served.
A process server delivered the temporary restraining orders and the civil defamation notices directly to my parents’ front door and Sarah’s suburban home. The impact was instantaneous and catastrophic for them.
Sarah’s Facebook post vanished within fifteen minutes of her receiving the cease-and-desist. But taking down the post wasn't enough to stop the momentum. I uploaded David’s unedited video footage to my own account, accompanied by the official medical report from the pediatric ER, clearly blurring out Lily’s face while leaving the terrifying marks on her arms completely visible.
I added a simple caption: “The truth about last night. My daughter was abused, and when I took her away, my family chose to cover it up.”
The internet reversed its judgment like a tidal wave.
The very same local community members who had condemned me hours earlier turned their fury toward Sarah and my parents. Comments on Sarah’s boutique business page were flooded with call-outs. Local parents began canceling appointments at her home bakery business. Extended family members who had previously taken my mother’s side were now calling my phone, stuttering apologies and expressing horror at what they had witnessed in the video.
My phone rang again at 6:00 PM. It was my brother David.
"They're losing their minds here, Mike," David said, his voice trembling over the line. "Dad is screaming at Sarah. Her business phone won't stop ringing with people canceling orders. Mom is sitting on the couch crying because the country club called to suspend her committee status."
"Good," I said without a drop of sympathy. "Why didn't you stop them last night, David?"

There was a long, heavy silence on the line.
"I was terrified, Mike," David admitted softly. "Dad has controlled all of us for so long. But when I saw what Sarah did to Lily... I knew I couldn't protect them anymore. I'm coming to your house. I want to give you the rest of the video files."
