The news of the guilty verdicts hit the local media outlets within minutes.
Front-page headlines in the regional paper read: Local Business Owner and Prominent Developer Convicted in Child Abuse Cover-up Case.
The financial fallout was swift and merciless.
My father’s development firm saw its major corporate contracts canceled overnight as business partners rushed to sever ties with a convicted felon. Bank loans were called in, and within two months, his firm was forced to declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The sprawling suburban mansion where the party took place was put up for court-ordered foreclosure auction to pay for legal debts and civil judgments.
Sarah’s bakery went completely out of business. Her home was put up for sale, and her husband filed for legal separation, taking their son Leo and moving across state lines to escape the crushing public scandal.
One afternoon, Mark Vance met me at a local coffee shop, handing me a cashier's check.
"What's this?" I asked, looking at the substantial number written on the paper.
"The settlement from the civil defamation suit," Mark said with a satisfied grin. "Sarah had to liquidate her remaining business assets to pay it. The court ordered every penny to be placed into a locked trust fund for Lily's college education and future."
