Chapter 11 - The Deposition Trap

Two weeks later, we were seated in a large, glass-walled conference room in downtown city legal offices for the formal depositions regarding the civil defamation suit and child abuse charges.

My attorney, Mark Vance, sat next to me with a thick binder of evidence. Across the oak table sat Sarah, her expensive defense attorney, and my father, who was acting as a financial guarantor for her legal defense.

Sarah looked haggard. Dark circles shadowed her eyes, and her polished, perfect facade had completely crumbled.

"Let the record reflect," Mark began, adjusting his microphone, "that we are conducting the deposition of Sarah Miller regarding the events of July 24th."

Sarah’s attorney leaned forward. "My client is prepared to offer a full formal apology and a cash settlement of fifty thousand dollars to settle all claims regarding the public social media post and the altercation."

Mark chuckled softly, a cold sound that sent a shiver down the room. "We aren't here to settle for cash, counsel. We are here to establish facts for the pending criminal trial."

Mark clicked a button on his tablet, and the massive wall monitor lit up with the audio-video recording David had captured—specifically the high-definition audio where Sarah clearly chuckled and said, "She's too sensitive anyway" right after I confronted her in the living room.

"Mrs. Miller," Mark asked, staring directly at Sarah. "Is that your voice on the recording?"

Sarah swallowed hard, glancing nervously at her attorney. "I... I was under extreme stress."

"Answer the question," Mark said sternly. "Is that your voice?"

"Yes," she whispered.

"And did you, or did you not, intentionally lock a five-year-old child in a dark room without supervision after inflicting physical marks on her body?"

"I didn't mean to hurt her!" Sarah burst out, tears streaming down her face. "My dad told me to keep her quiet! He didn't want her ruining the party atmosphere!"

My father’s head snapped toward Sarah in shock. "Sarah! Shut your mouth!"

"It's true!" Sarah shouted, completely breaking down and pointing a trembling finger at our father. "Dad told me to handle her! He said Michael's kid was too soft and was ruining Leo's special day! He told me to put her somewhere until she stopped crying!"

The trap had sprung. The illusion of family unity had completely collapsed into total internal betrayals.
