I didn't reply to David immediately. First, I called Mark Vance, a top-tier family law and criminal defense attorney in the city, who also happened to be an old college friend. Within two hours, I was sitting in his wood-paneled office downtown, presenting the medical records from the ER and playing the raw video file David had sent me.

Mark watched the screen carefully, his expression shifting from calm professional curiosity to cold disgust.

"This is rock-solid, Michael," Mark said, leaning back in his leather chair and tapping his pen against the desk. "The injuries on Lily match a clear pattern of physical abuse and unlawful restraint. Your sister's public post claiming you attacked her 'unprovoked' is straightforward libel."

"I don't just want to defend myself, Mark," I said, my voice icy. "They protected Sarah while my daughter bled in a dark bathroom. My father threw a weapon at my head while I was carrying a child. I want full legal accountability."

"We start with a cease-and-desist and an immediate emergency protective order," Mark explained, drafting a document on his screen. "We hit Sarah with a defamation notice demanding she take down that post immediately, or face a massive civil suit. And we file criminal charges against your father for felony reckless endangerment."

"Do it," I said without hesitation. "All of it."

Before I left Mark’s office, my phone rang again. It was my mother. I put it on speaker so Mark could listen.

"Michael," her voice came through, dripping with condescending sorrow. "This has gone far enough. Your father is willing to forget the mug incident if you come home, apologize to Sarah, and delete your legal complaints. Think about your family's reputation."

"My daughter is my family, Mom," I answered coldly. "You sat there and ate cake while she was crying in the dark. You are dead to us."

"You'll destroy this entire family!" she shrieked.
