Chapter 15 - The Criminal Verdict

The day of the trial arrived with gray clouds hovering over the county courthouse.

My father sat at the defense table in a navy blue suit, looking diminished and tired. Sarah sat next to her own criminal defense lawyer, facing misdemeanor child abuse and assault charges.

The courtroom was packed with local journalists, former family acquaintances, and curious onlookers.

The prosecution called David as their star witness. He took the stand calmly, swearing on the Bible, and presented the raw, unedited footage from the birthday party. The wide-screen monitors in the courtroom displayed the clear video of Sarah dragging Lily into the dark room, slapping her, locking the door, and my father launching the heavy ceramic mug straight at my head as I fled.

The jury watched in absolute, stunned silence.

When the prosecutor called me to the stand, I didn't look at my father or my sister. I looked directly at the twelve jury members and recounted every second of that night—the cold dark bathroom, the crescent marks on my daughter's skin, and the terrifying realization that the people who were supposed to love her had turned into her abusers.

The jury deliberated for less than two hours.

"On count one, child endangerment, we find the defendant Sarah Miller... GUILTY." "On count two, assault, we find the defendant Sarah Miller... GUILTY." "On count three, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, we find the defendant Richard Miller... GUILTY."

A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Sarah collapsed onto the table, sobbing hysterically into her arms. My father stared straight ahead, his jaw clenched, his hands trembling violently as the judge ordered him taken into custody pending sentencing.
