Chapter 4 - The Digital Smear Campaign

By 7:00 AM the next morning, my living room was flooded with cold morning light. Lily was sound asleep on the couch, wrapped in her favorite pastel blanket, a soft ice pack taped gently over her left cheek. I hadn't slept a single second.
I finally powered on my personal phone. The screen exploded with notifications. Over forty missed calls, dozens of voicemails, and hundreds of notifications from Facebook, Instagram, and local community group pages.
My stomach dropped into a cold pit.
Sarah had been busy while I was at the hospital. She had posted a high-definition selfie showing her bruised jaw, accompanied by a long, tearful paragraph detailing how I had supposedly gone on an unprovoked, violent rampage at a peaceful family birthday party.
“I was just trying to help my niece when Michael lost his mind,” her post read, already shared over three hundred times by local friends and extended family. “He hit me, threatened my son, and took off into the night with Lily. Please pray for our family during this painful time.”
The comments were a bloodbath of public condemnation. Extended relatives I hadn't spoken to in years were chiming in, calling me abusive, unstable, and dangerous.
“He always had a temper,” my cousin Mark wrote. “Unbelievable. He needs to be locked up,” another neighbor commented.
Then, my phone chimed with a new message. It was a direct message from my brother, David. Attached was a raw video file—the footage he had recorded on his phone during the party.
I pressed play with a shaking thumb.
The video showed the brightly lit dining room, Leo blowing out his birthday candles, and then... the sudden loud crash of the bathroom door opening. You could clearly hear Lily’s terrified crying echoing from the hallway. Then came Sarah’s voice, loud and clear: "Oh, stop whining, she's just a dramatic brat!" followed by my father’s roaring demand for me to sit back down.

David had sent the raw video with a short, simple text: “I didn’t delete it. I have the full audio. What do you want me to do?”
The tide was about to turn.
