Chapter 1 - The Mug at the Threshold

The ceramic mug released from my father’s grip the exact moment I yanked open the heavy oak door.
I twisted my right shoulder backward to shield her, wrapping both of my arms tightly around Lily. The heavy ceramic whizzed past, close enough that the rush of air brushed my earlobe, before it smashed into the plaster wall right above the coat rack. Lily pressed her tear-soaked face deep into my collarbone. In the background, the cheerful party playlist bumped on, upbeat and oblivious, as jagged shards rained down onto my mother’s polished tiles.
"Michael!" my mother shrieked.
She didn't even bother to ask if Lily was injured.
My dad remained planted near the kitchen island, his throwing arm still raised in the air. A furious flush crept up his neck, contrasting with his crisp grey polo. Sarah was pressing her palm against the jaw I had just struck less than a minute before. Spilled champagne was rapidly soaking into the expensive carpet beneath her feet.
"You don't just march out of my home after laying a hand on your sister," Dad growled.
I shifted my gaze down to the five-year-old trembling against my chest. Her yellow sundress was wet with tears and tap water. An ugly purple swelling was already forming under her eye. Angry, crescent-shaped fingernail marks dug into both of her forearms.
"Your daughter assaulted mine."
Sarah let out a scoffing, breathless chuckle. "I hardly even pushed her."
Lily squeezed her little legs even tighter around my torso.
