Chapter 13 - A Safe Haven

While the legal storm consumed my parents and sister, I focused entirely on rebuilding Lily’s world.

We moved out of our suburban rental and into a small, light-filled bungalow near the coast, far away from the neighborhood where my family operated. The new house had a wide back yard with an old oak tree, and a big bay window where Lily could sit and read her favorite picture books.

Her physical marks had healed, leaving no scars on her soft skin, but the emotional wounds took longer. For the first few weeks, she would flinch whenever a door slammed or when someone raised their voice on TV.

I brought in Dr. Elena Rostova, a renowned child psychologist specializing in trauma.

"She’s making remarkable progress, Michael," Dr. Rostova told me sitting on the front porch while Lily played on the lawn with our new rescued golden retriever puppy, Barnaby. "Children are resilient when they know they have one unwavering protector. You saved her that night—not just physically, but emotionally. She knows you will always stand between her and the dark."

Lily ran over, her yellow sundress flowing in the cool ocean breeze, holding a yellow dandelion up to me.

"Look, Daddy! I made a wish!" she beamed, her cheeks full of rosy health, the purple bruise entirely gone.

"What did you wish for, sweetie?" I asked, pulling her onto my lap and hugging her tightly.

"That we can stay here forever, just you, me, and Barnaby," she giggled, pressing her face into my collarbone.

"Wish granted, baby," I whispered. "Forever."
