Chapter 18 - Healing under the Oak Tree

Summer returned to the coast, bringing warm ocean breezes, bright blue skies, and the constant soothing sound of waves crashing against the shoreline.

In our backyard, the large oak tree was now in full bloom, casting soft, dappled shade over the cool green grass. I spent the weekend building a wooden treehouse for Lily, sanding down every wooden edge until it was as smooth as silk, painting the window trim in bright yellow—her favorite color.

"Daddy, look!" Lily squealed with delight, running out of the back door carrying a tray with two plastic cups of homemade lemonade.

David was right behind her, carrying a box of wooden shingles for the roof. He had become a constant, joyful presence in our lives, slipping naturally into the role of the loving, supportive uncle he had always wanted to be.

"Careful with the tray, sweetie," David chuckled, helping her set it down on the wooden picnic table.

Lily sprinted up the small wooden ladder into her new treehouse, popping her head out of the yellow window and waving down at us with a beaming, radiant smile.

"I can see the ocean from up here, Daddy!" she shouted happily.

I looked up at her, my heart overflowing with peace. Her eyes were bright, full of life, completely free of the terror that had consumed them on that terrible night a year ago. The nightmare was finally behind us, locked away in court records and forgotten bank accounts.

David walked over, leaning against the tree trunk, holding a cold cup of lemonade. "She looks happy, Mike. Really happy."

"She is," I said quietly, watching her laugh as Barnaby barked playfully at the base of the tree ladder. "We both are."
