Chapter 9 - The Eviction

The judge’s ruling was swift and merciless.

My mother and Chelsea were found liable for the stolen funds plus extensive damages.

Because they had spent the money, the court ordered the liquidation of their assets.

My mother's beloved, massive house—the site of so many family barbecues and cruel jokes—was seized and sold.

Chelsea and Mark had to sell their home and move into a tiny, cramped apartment.

I stood across the street on the day the moving trucks arrived at my parents' old house.

My mother walked out the front door holding a small cardboard box.

She looked old, defeated, and entirely alone.

She spotted me standing by my car, but she didn't say a word.

She simply lowered her head and got into a cheap taxi.

I used the recovered funds to move my father into a beautiful, high-end care facility where he was treated with dignity.

I made sure his medical needs were fully met, honoring my promise.

But I never visited my mother, and I never answered Chelsea's desperate pleas for financial help.

The toxic roots of my family tree had finally been severed.
